Inside the Goulandris Museum, you will find masterpieces from the most prominent European artists, as well as well-known Greek painters.
In a short period of time, the Museum of Basile & Elise Goulandris Foundation has already gathered an important amount of Greek visitors, and tourists. The multi-floor building consists of exhibiting spaces, shop, café – restaurant, library, children’s workshop and an amphitheatre.
Even though the museum had temporarily closed its doors due to Covid-19, it has started operating again and is ready to welcome art enthusiasts.
It’s pleasant that a museum of contemporary art dedicates two rooms for Greek artists. It’s not so common for Greek museums to exhibit works of arts from local artists, since most of their works belong to private collections. Inside the Goulandris Museum, among others you will discover pieces of art from Yiannis Moralis, Dimitris Mytaras, Yannis Tsarouchis, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Konstantinos Parthenis, George Zongolopoulos, Yannis Gaïtis, Panayiotis Tetsis, Alekos Fassianos, Kostas Tsoklis, Sophia Vari, Michael Tombros.
Two floors of the museum are dedicated to the most important artists of modern and contemporary art. The collection of Museum Goulandris is made of works from the greatest ones, such as Vincent Van Gogh, Doménikos Theotokópoulos, Alberto Giacometti, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Joan Miró, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Francis Beacon, Wassily Kandinsky, Roy Lichtenstein and Claude Monet. Moreover, another room is dedicated in a selected collection of French furniture and art objects (from 18th century), and Chinese art objects.
Walking through the exhibits, you feel like you are in a respectful European museum, somewhere in London or Berlin. Until now, we had to travel to a city like these to visit such a museum. Now, you can see world-class art in the heart of Athens. You can see details from the biggest artists of the last century. You can admire a Basile & Elise Goulandris portrait from Rorris, a still life from Van Gogh, the Sunrise from Lichtenstein, the little dancer from Degas, the Descent from the Cross from Gaitis, the Veil of Saint Veronica from Theotokópoulos, a self-portrait from Cézanne, the Woman of Venice from Giacometti.
You need to spend few hours inside the museum to properly see all the rooms, but the exhibition is totally worth the time. Soon, the museum of Basile & Elise Goulandris Foundation will be known all over the world.
